Merced Food Faire ’09

The Merced Hunger Task Force team came together with Merced County Food Bank, a few local Farmers and a great line up of non-profit organizations, offering Merced County a chance to learn about their local community resources.  The attendance was good, the weather was perfect and vibe was warm!

The Hunger Task Force is a dedicated group of volunteers, community programs and non-profits that believe in helping improve the quality of life by offering better choices for those in need.  I would definitely say they accomplished their mission last week combining educational information and entertainment that put smiles on a lot of faces!

The team is already looking forward to making “Merced Food Faire” an annual that will be the fall event not to miss!

This my locavores is a must see…..a good step in supporting local!

This is my second post about this documentary and after seeing it my emotional reaction confirmed the importance of  my blog…to share what I feel is important with my community….good whole food & how to find it, I am one small effort to support local and this film is the reason why.

Mark your calendars & take a friend to the beautiful restored  State Theater in Modesto. Food, Inc. is a powerful documentary that will affect the way you eat no doubt, or at least plant a seed in that direction.

The film runs August 14 – August 22…..if you see it, we want some feed back here!

According to Organic Consumers Association and many grassroots supporters putting the pressure on Obama and Secretary of Ag Vilsack, there is good news for the future of our food.
Now lets hope they put their money where their mouth is….or should we say HEALTHY FOOD where their mouth is!
Read on…
Thanks to your hard work and ongoing pressure, the Obama Administration and Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack are apparently responding to OCA and our allies’ calls for major reform in the food and farm sector, including:
  • President Obama’s budget plan includes a $1 billion a year increase in funding for U.S. child nutrition programs including school lunches.
  • Secretary Vilsack has called for government support for farmers using alternative energy, such as wind and solar, as well as those converting to organic farming practices. Vilsack also has called for cuts in taxpayer subsidy payments to large farms.
  • Vilsack has pledged the USDA’s support in ending racial discrimination in the farm sector, specifically condemning past discrimination in limiting credit opportunities for African-American farmers.
  • The USDA’s National Organic Program has cracked down on companies spiking organic fertilizer with prohibited synthetic additives.
  • President Obama has guaranteed at least $500 million for the Green Jobs Act in the stimulus package.

What’s next? Keep the pressure on! Congress, President Obama and Secretary Vilsack need to hear from you on key issues.
